The referral process

What is the Bristol Referral Service?

The Bristol Referral Service (SBRS) is a team of local doctors and administrators whose role is to ensure that you receive the most appropriate care for your health problem first time.

What will happen next?

Your GP has sent your referral to the Bristol Referral Service because increasingly there is a range of alternative community based services available that can avoid the need for you to go to hospital. These alternatives will often be more convenient and faster access. The Bristol Referral Service will support your GP to agree the best care for you.

This may include referral:

  • to a specialist service at hospital of your choice
  • directly for tests and/or investigations
  • starting treatment that does not need to involve a stay in hospital (for example, medication or physiotherapy)
  • to a community-based service
  • back to the GP with advice on how best to care for your health problem.

The Bristol Referral service team will then write to you telling you which of these options has been recommended. This letter will clearly describe to you what will happen next.

What do I do if I don’t receive a letter?

If you do not receive a letter from the Bristol Referral Service team after two weeks from when you saw your GP, then please contact the South Bristol Referral Service team on 0117 900 2455 rather than your GP and we will check your referral.

Please help us to help you:

To ensure that the Bristol Referral Service can contact you as quickly as possible, please ensure that your GP practice has your correct address and telephone number. Ideally this should include a mobile and/or work telephone number.

If you are planning to go on a long holiday (i.e. over two weeks) in the near future, please make sure that your GP is aware of this so that your referral can be planned around this and you can be seen as quickly as possible.
